OpenAI Unveils o3-pro and Dramatically Cuts Pricing
OpenAI has launched o3-pro, a new reasoning-focused model that outperforms Claude 4 Opus and Gemini 2.5 Pro in advanced scientific and mathematical tasks. The model is designed for step-by-step thinking, with expert evaluators consistently preferring it over standard o3 across science, education, programming, and data analysis tasks.
Alongside this release, OpenAI slashed prices for its base o3 model by 80%, from $10/$40 per million tokens to just $2/$8, making it substantially more affordable than competing models from Google and Anthropic. The new pricing structure appears strategically designed to encourage broader experimentation and adoption, similar to how AWS's price drops accelerated cloud computing adoption years ago.
Meta's $15 Billion Bet on Scale AI and Superintelligence
Meta is finalizing an investment of up to $15 billion in Scale AI, representing one of the largest external AI bets in Silicon Valley to date. The deal would give Meta a 49% stake in the data-labeling company and bring over co-founder Alexandr Wang to lead a new "superintelligence" lab aimed at outperforming OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
This move reflects a shift in Meta's AI strategy following Llama 4's underwhelming launch. Rather than building everything in-house, Meta appears to be carving a new path—outsourcing infrastructure while focusing on distribution. This investment comes as Meta is also reportedly offering seven-to-nine figure compensation packages to poach top AI researchers from competitors.
Apple Integrates ChatGPT into System-Wide Apple Intelligence
Apple's WWDC 2025 showcased extensive AI integration across its ecosystem, including a system-wide AI assistant branded as Apple Intelligence. The most significant announcement was Siri's ability to directly use ChatGPT (with user permission), alongside deeper AI suggestions and new system commands in iOS 26 and macOS Sequoia.
Rather than creating its own large language model to compete with GPT, Apple is prioritizing elegant integration of existing AI capabilities while maintaining its focus on privacy and user experience. This approach represents Apple's characteristic strategy of refining and integrating technologies rather than pioneering them, effectively turning the iPhone into an ambient AI assistant that doesn't need to "shout to be smart."
